Murray, Ky., May 28, 2024----Patrick Morris, Murray Middle School Safety Resource Officer (SRO), has been selected to receive the KY SRO Merit Award for 2024. Lou Carter, Murray Independent School District Safe Schools Coordinator, announced the honor to Morris during the Murray Middle School 8th Grade Year-End Promotion Ceremony. Morris was assigned to MMS in April 2004. He has served as SRO across all of Murray Independent School District campuses throughout his career.
During Morris’s tenure, he created the Novel McReynolds Youth Academy. The program honors the late Murray Police Chief, Novel McReynolds who was shot and killed in the line of duty in April of 1957. During the academy 5-8 grade students are taught what it takes to become a police officer, including education, life skills and public speaking. During the course students learn how to process a crime scene, conduct a traffic stop, the dangers of using drugs and alcohol, among other police procedures.
Morris’s accomplishments as MMS SRO include increasing the MMS security features, which include assisting in writing a grant to supply security cameras for the Murray Independent School District schools, UHF radio for school safety, and being a liaison between the Murray Police Department, adding safety and security in daily operations.
Morris will be honored at the summer conference in Georgetown on June 11.
