MMS STLP Students Prepare For State

Murray Middle School students are preparing for their upcoming Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) state competition in Lexington at RUPP Arena/Central Bank Center, April 19, 2023.

Directed by Mechelle Morgan, Murray Independent School District (MISD) Director of Instructional Technology, and Sheri Muehleman, MISD Gifted and Talented Coordinator, the STLP program provides student groups a chance to develop and implement a service project that benefits students, classrooms, schools and the community. "Mrs. Muehleman and I are so excited for these students.  STLP is a wonderful program that not only focuses on technology, but on collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking.  Seeing the project ideas that these students have developed and are bringing to life is amazing," Morgan said.

Students develop and implement their projects by using project based learning to engage in deeper learning that has real-world relevance, develops innovation, creativity, builds relationships, and maximizes the use of technology.  "STLP allows students to incorporate creative problem solving, collaboration and a true sense of community involvement, they are true inspirations," Muehleman said.

Students competed virtually in the STLP Regional Competition in November by presenting their projects to a group of judges who provided feedback and scored the projects based on the KY Academic Standards for Technology.  Based on their Regional presentations, six MMS groups advanced to state:  Tiger Advocates For Animals:  Lillian Ryan and Adelyn Tucker; Don't Suffer in Silence:  Laurel Johnson and Lydia Yayenie; Autism Awareness:  Devanshi Shastri and Jonathan Mehr; Saving Energy:  Leah Stark, Keny Vu, Cade Turner and Kapri Phelps; Bring Joy: Emeri Whipple and Ally Mae Compton; and Miindful Growth Garden:  Anna Kough, Kylie Reitz, and Kylee Green.

“We can’t wait to see them continue to implement their projects and present them at the state STLP competition in April,” Morgan said.
