MISD Releases Updated Return to School Statement - 12/3/20

Students, Parents, Teachers, and Staff of the Murray Independent School District,

Students Preschool through Grade 05 will NOT be returning to in-person learning on Monday, December 07, 2020. The Executive Order signed by Governor Andy Beshear on November 18, 2020 (attached), prohibits the return to in-person instruction unless a county’s COVID-19 incidence rate is below 25 cases per 100,000 people (Red Zone). Per the Kentucky Department of Public Health website map, as of Wednesday, December 02, 2020, Calloway County shows an incidence rate of 62.3.

Dr. Jason Glass, Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education sent the following statement to all Kentucky Public School Districts:

“The governor’s executive order (EO) will have the force and effect of law. Therefore, all local school districts are expected to comply with all provisions of any EO applicable to local school districts. KDE is available to provide technical assistance to school districts to assist with compliance.

Certified school employees are bound by the Professional Code of Ethics and may be subject to disciplinary action by the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) for violation of the Professional Code of Ethics. Furthermore, KRS 156.132 provides for the removal or suspension of public school officers, including local board members, for immorality, misconduct in office, incompetence, willful neglect of duty or nonfeasance.”

My office will continue to evaluate local COVID-19 data.  Whether or not elementary students return to in-person instruction on Monday, December 14, 2020 will be determined on December 10, 2020.

Murray Middle and High Schools (grades 6-12) will be closed to in-person classes through January 11, 2021.

Thank you,

Coy D. Samons, Superintendent
