Murray Elementary School students are back in action today (bottom photo of students during online instruction today).
Prior to the Thanksgiving break, Owen Spengler (top picture), a student in Kandi Dawson's class, wore his thinking cap while designing his Thanksgiving Day parade float. Spengler joined all third grade students in the deign a parade float assignment. Students were asked to draw their design and imagine what supplies from a given list (flags, balloons, cotton candy, disposable camera, bottles of soda, popcorn, ice cream cone, and umbrella) would be needed to actually build the float. Then students were asked to calculate the total expense, using a $600 budget, and write a persuasive letter convincing their teacher, their float was the best choice.
Students were required to solve word problems about purchases made (calculating cost and change back after payment.) An optional activity was to draw the parade route and configure the length of their path.
Mrs. Dawson plans to create a virtual parade with Google Slides and share with her third grade class.
