Joshua Sloan, Murray High School senior, has been named a National Merit Semifinalist in the 2027 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Sloan joins the approximate 16,000 Semifinalists named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $24 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalist are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Sloan is a member of the MHS History Club, MHS Academic Club, a five-year MHS Marching Band member and a Jazz
Band member. Sloan attended the Governor Scholar Program in Moorehead this past summer and is a 2024 MHS Distinguished Scholar recognizing his above 30 ACT Score.
Over 1.2 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
National Merit Scholarship 2027 winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
Sloan is the son of Matthew and Bethany Sloan.
Since 1974, Murray High School has boasted 62 National Merit Finalists, 4 Semi-Finalists, and 15 National Merit Commended scholars.

Murray Middle School School Resource Officer Patrick Morris conducts a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) class for fifth grade students. Students meet two times a week for nine weeks. Each student receives their own workbook. They go over the DARE - Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Each students receives a workbook and Daren the lion Mascot assists Morris in the lessons.
At the end of program, a graduation will be held. Students will receive a gift certificate, t-shirt, and a pizza party.

Mrs. Kough’s Murray Elementary Class was chosen as the Murray State Athletics Classroom of the Month.
The Classroom of the Month program recognizes outstanding local classrooms while providing students an opportunity to connect with Murray State student-athletes and Racer Athletics. As part of the recognition, MSU athletic team members visit classrooms to celebrate students and spend time with them.

During the September Murray Board of Education meeting Amberly Munsey, Murray Elementary School Library Teacher, was recognized as the August 2026 CFSB Tiger Pride Educator.
For more than 20 years, Munsey has poured her heart into educating and caring for students, while also being a source of love and support for the staff around her. Munsey’s nomination described Munsey as: " Genuine, dedicated, and a phenomenal person both inside and outside of school. Someone who truly loves educating children, loves her colleagues, and has spent her career providing students with encouragement, support and care."

Butler’s nominations said Butler knows students by name, takes time to talk with them, and builds the kind of relationships with students that make them enjoy coming to school. “She is always willing to help, whether that means supporting staff, working concessions for hours after school, assisting with dances and activities, jumping into a social media video, or tackling whatever needs to be done.”
“Kind, funny, sassy, generous, loving, and a ringleader who gets things done,” were affirmations by her colleagues. “She shows up, she helps, and she cares. Mrs. Butler gives her time, energy, humor and heart to Murray Middle, and our school is better because of her.”

Members of the 2026-2027 Leadership Tomorrow Class comprised of Calloway County and Murray High school junior and seniors kicked off their Leadership Tomorrow Class at Murray State University.
Jarrod Martin, with Journey Church, led the morning session. Dr. David Meinschein, Ed.D., MISD Superintendent, and Mark Mallory, CCHS principal, welcomed this year's group.
Heidi Shultz, Calloway County Independence Bank president, provided the afternoon program. Students were broken into groups and each group of students were given $25 to participate in the Independence Bank’s Here For Good Program. Students worked collaboratively to share kindness and goodwill throughout the Murray State University campus and.

Murray Middle School Eighth Grade Students attended SPARK today at Murray State University Racer Arena. While there the students met with numerous community, and regional employers to discover potential career opportunities.
SPARK is a career exploration experience developed by the Murray Works Foundation designed specifically for eighth grade students in Murray & Calloway County School Districts. SPARK provides students a hands-on learning experience, intended to spark their interests and passions. SPARK introduces students to local career options they may not be aware of in an effort to strengthen our local workforce of the future.

High Atttendance Day at Murray Middle School started with Walk to School followed by an afternoon pep rally outside at Ty Holland Stadium. Teachers and Students competed in games and studentswere awarded prizes for their attendance. A special thanks to everyone who makes this event a success for our students.
