Murray Elementary: General Information

Murray Elementary School

Children enter Murray Elementary School at age five and remain until they are ready for fourth grade.  Originally built in 1962, the school building has been extensively expanded and modernized.  The 2002 expansion included a new entryway, front office, media center, cafeteria and kitchen, computer lab, and six new classrooms.  In addition, the school features a central outdoor courtyard enjoyed by all.

At Murray Elementary, teachers help student learn the way children learn best - by moving, touching, exploring, and doing.  Students are placed in classrooms which allow them to progress in the best way for the individual child.  Teachers are teamed together so that they have a common planning time, which allows teachers to share ideas and materials

As well as classroom teachers, Murray Elementary employs enrichment area teachers, (visual arts, music, library media specialist, and physical education), teachers for students with special needs, and speech language pathologist teachers.  Instructional assistants work alongside teachers in teh classroom.  An active volunteer program brings many caring adults into the school.

In activities, elementary teachers stress connection.  Rather than teaching in isolation, they often teach in collaboration with other teachers and involve children in cooperative learning groups. In addition, all children have regular instruction in using technology in the school's modern computer lab.

Murray Elementary has a very active PTO. The PTO assists with school-sponsored projects, holds meetings of interest to parents and teachers, conducts special activities, and hosts some purely social opportunities for teachers and families to meet one another.  The annual "Spring Swing" fundraiser is a night of fun for students, parents, friends, and community members.
